Spiritual Discernment in Times of Confusion
Spiritual Discernment in Times of Confusion
Discernment is the art of distinguishing between what comes from God and what comes from the world. In times of confusion, this ability becomes more necessary than ever.
What is Discernment?
St. Ignatius of Loyola defined discernment as “an experienced knowledge, to feel and penetrate where the various motions are found, and to know the differences between them.”
It is not intuition, but cultivated attention.
The Three Principles of Discernment
1. Constant Prayer
Discernment is born in prayer. Without it, we are blind.
2. Community
No one discerns alone. Community offers mirror and counterweight.
3. Time
Discernment is not immediate. It requires patience and perseverance.
Signs of True Discernment
- Inner peace: God’s decisions bring peace, even when they are difficult
- Consistency: They align with Scripture and tradition
- Fruit: They produce good fruits in life
“Discernment is a gift, but it is also a discipline.”
Daily Practice
Dedicate 15 minutes a day to silent prayer. Listen before speaking. Observe before acting.
